Arizonans like YOU can unite and support their favorite nonprofit(s) for exactly 24 hours of virtual giving. This day of fundraising is a community-led effort to invest in our state.
This year, thanks to a private donor, the Junior League of Phoenix Foundation will receive an additional $20 for each donation made on April 4th!

Over the past 12 years, the Foundation has fostered and sustained the mission and community impact of the Junior League of Phoenix through stewardship of financial resources.az gives 2

  • R.O.C.K.E.T.S.
  • Director of Operations Training
  • Two league-wide trainings for all members
  • Sending members to Organizational Development Training and to Southwest Exchange
  • Fully funding CLO (Community Leadership & Outreach) program
  • Training members of PAC (Public A airs Committee) at the Annual Conference.

The Junior League of Phoenix Foundation Board of Directors is looking for dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join us as members of the Board to steward our mission. Ideally, Board candidates will have a desire to become involved in non-profit management, finance, grant funding, marketing and/or advocacy. What is essential is a desire to act as a fundraising liaison for our donors. Learn more about the Foundation and the programs we serve at foundationjlp.org.

Please join us for light appetizers and beverages and to learn more about the opportunity. Resumes will be accepted until March 13, 2017. We will be conducting interviews with selected candidates on a rolling basis, with the intention of appointing new Board members by April 15, 2017. Meaningful Impact Through Municipal Service

CLO Panel featuring Dr. Donna Reiner and Mike Sonenberg P.E.

muni2On October 25, 2016, the Community Leadership and Outreach (CLO) Committee hosted a panel featuring Dr. Donna Reiner of the City of Phoenix Arts and Culture Commission and Mike Sonenberg of the City of Tempe Aviation commission. This was the first CLO panel event, where CLO secures panelists to discuss opportunities for personal development and/or leadership in the community in response to interest from Junior League of Phoenix (JLP) members. This panel event was graciously hosted by Arizona State University and CLO panel events have been generously funded by the Junior League of Phoenix Foundation to increase the number of available training opportunities for all JLP members.

The panelists started by introducing themselves to the audience of twenty JLP members. After general introductions, the panelists started discussing their experience on municipal boards and commissions and why they decided that this particular form of community service and leadership was the right form for them. Both panelists agreed that the reason they found service on a municipal board or commission so rewarding is being able influence entire communities of people through advocacy for increased community involvement. Dr. Reiner discussed a building she was involved in protecting when she was on the City of Phoenix Historic Preservation Commission. By being a part of the process, she was able to alert people that would have an interest in protecting the structure that the building was at risk, and was then able to advocate on their behalf to find a way to preserve the structure without limiting the ability of the building to be utilized. Whenever Dr. Reiner drives by the building she is reminded of the impact that preserving that building had on the community.

Mike then discussed how many openings there are at both the state and municipal levels for people of varying skill types and levels. While certain positions do require a specific skill set or background, many municipal and state level boards and commissions have openings set aside for community members that lack a specific skill set or background but that are interested in the subject area and able to represent the interests of the community-at-large.

muni1Both panelists encouraged members interested in serving on a board or commission to attend a meeting before applying to a specific board or commission. Both panelists emphasized that each board or commission is different and some have shorter meetings, while others have meetings that can last for hours, and the time commitment for each committee will vary, so it is important to engage with the board or commission before expressing interest to assess if it is a good fit both practically and in terms of personality.

In the end, the CLO Panel on Municipal Boards and Commission provided interested JLP members with an opportunity to interact and learn from members of the community that are currently engaged on local commissions, and to explore their interest and commitment to engaging with the Greater Phoenix community to better the community for the benefit of all.

CLO Fireside Chat featuring Lois Savage, Lodestar Foundation President

On September 29, 2016, the Junior League of Phoenix Community Leadership and Outreach (CLO) Committee will be hosting a small-group, members-only speaker meeting featuring Lois Savage, President of the Lodestar Foundation. This will be the first event in an eight part series of “fireside chats” where established community leaders are invited to share their wisdom and experiences with JLP members that are (or are interested in becoming) up and coming community leaders. The CLO speaker series has been generously funded by the Junior League of Phoenix Foundation to increase available training opportunities for JLP members.

About Lois

lois-savageAfter having spent many years as an attorney (first as a Special Assistant Attorney General and then as a real estate attorney with Snell and Wilmer, Sunbelt Holdings and DMB), Lois embarked on a second career in philanthropy and has served as president of The Lodestar Foundation since its inception in 1999. In addition to her Lodestar duties, Lois served as executive director of Social Venture Partners Arizona (a venture philanthropy organization initiated by Lodestar) during the first eighteen months of its existence.

To Lois, the move to professional philanthropy was a logical next step from the world of community volunteering. Among the boards and commissions on which she has served over the years are the City of Phoenix Planning Commission, Heard Museum, VSUW Foundation, Arizona Grantmakers Forum, Junior League of Phoenix, Valley Leadership, Audubon Arizona, Neighborhood Housing Services of Phoenix, KAET Advisory Board, Ballet Arizona and Act One.

Lois was born and raised in Massachusetts, has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Vassar and Simmons Colleges, respectively, and graduated with honors from Boston University Law School. Lois and her attorney husband, Steve, have been Phoenix residents since 1973. They consider their finest achievements to be their three grown children and their five grandchildren.

The Lodestar Foundation was created to put into practice a set of five interrelated sequential principles:

  1. The basic goal of all humans is inner happiness.
  2. Happiness can only be found by identifying and striving to achieve a meaningful purpose for one’s existence.
  3. One meaningful purpose is to endeavor to help one’s fellow man.
  4. Although there are countless ways to help, ultimately the ability to help is limited by one’s time, money and other resources.
  5. By identifying and adopting a mission that is not focused on any specific field of interest and focusing instead on leveraging resources (that is, providing the most help with the most effective and efficient use of resources) and applying those resources to processes that affect the entire social sector, those resources can maximize the impact of helping others and thereby magnify the opportunity to achieve happiness.

Foundation Announces 2016 JLP Grant Recipients!

The Junior League of Phoenix Foundation Board of Directors is proud to announce that the Foundation has awarded the Junior League of Phoenix with the following grants:
 Foundation grants
  • $1,500 to train members of PAC (Public Affairs Committee) at the Annual Conference. This committee will advocate for JLP’s mission and be ambassadors for JLP’s programs. They will inform the public and public officials about the JLP’s mission and focus area of Building a Healthy Arizona
  • $2,938 to fully fund the new CLO (Community Leadership & Outreach) program. This program will educate and train JLP members in core leadership areas in order to add the JLP voice and women to the Greater Phoenix nonprofit community. The program will begin creating a network of nonprofit entities that are interested in incorporating current and former JLP members in their leadership.
  • $8,945 to fully fund six JLP members to attend an ODI (Organizational Development Institute). ODIs have demonstrated their effectiveness as informative, inspiring and innovative three-day weekend training programs. Attending ODI can be key to a leader’s success as they help her build leadership skills and provide training in fundamental areas.
  • $5,000 for league- wide training, open to all members, with a renowned trainer, such as Vicki Clark.
For a grand total of $18,383 in funding!! We are proud to support the training aspect mission of Junior League of Phoenix as it impacts the future and development of the League and it’s members.
